St. Austell Running Club Cornwall

Established November 2007

The Date 10/10/10

The Event - The Eden Project Marathon

Following a successful debut last year, the Eden Project Marathon will be returning on October 10 with the promise of more competitors than any other Cornish race.

Applications for the 2010 race, once again staged in collaboration with St. Austell Running Club, are now open. https://www.edenbookings.com/marathon/

The race day will see runners taking part in not only the full 26 mile distance, but also a half marathon and one-mile fun run.

The courses for the big races will follow a similar route to last year, both starting in front of the iconic Biomes before touring the landscape of the clay country and returning to finish at Eden.

Both full and half marathon courses are very challenging and are designed to give runners a taste of the evolving landscape. Plus, in true Cornish style, runners can enjoy a pint of Sharp’s ale and a pasty when they cross the finish line.

Eden is also holding a pasta party the night before, where participants can stock up on carbohydrates in the beautiful surroundings of the dramatically lit Biomes.

The fun run is staged entirely at Eden, taking a route through both Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes, giving runners the opportunity to see the world in a mile.

And thanks to every single marshal, timekeeper, drink station helper, etc, without whose help the successful running of the event could not have taken place.

This was a real community effort.

Dear All

What we achieved at yesterday’s Fun Run, Half Marathon and Marathon was simply amazing.   From the outset - when Paul and I presented our proposals to the committee and the members - the support, good will, professionalism and hard work brought to the event have been fantastic.

The original concept was to create an iconic race to showcase the St. Austell area and to enable runners to come and see the superb amenities that are being created as the landscape is regenerated. Even though the weather decided to sulk, it didn’t prevent the competitors from taking on the tough and interesting terrain. Many experienced runners commented that it was one of the best courses they had ever run.

The runners were amazed and full of gratitude for the Marshals, Helpers, Cyclists, Supporters and Drinks Stations’ teams around the course, who gave the now legendary St. Austell welcome and enthusiastic support to all the competitors - despite the weather!

Many of our fellow Cornish Running Clubs have sent messages of congratulations and praise for what we achieved yesterday.  This, coming from our peers who know first hand what it takes to run a successful race, is very gratifying.  I’m sure there were many things that didn’t quite work out as we had planned and many areas where we can change and improve things, but for a first attempt at such a mammoth undertaking, it was a great success.

Since the club started a couple of years ago there have been many milestones where it could be considered we had come of age. –

However, in my mind there is absolutely no doubt that the effort all the members put into the events at Eden yesterday is the defining moment, where we can be proud to say: -

The St. Austell Running Club has come of age.

We have not only encouraged our members to get running, but we have now taken that next step to get over 1500 runners of all abilities to come to St. Austell and compete in what I believe and hope will be an annual major event in the running calendar.

Many many thanks to you all for putting, the Clay country, St. Austell, and St. Austell Running Club on the map

Doug Alsop Chairman St. Austell Running Club
