There were 3 distances - the 7.5km Light Trail (300hm), 16km Classic Trail (550m) and 24.7 km 25 grams Power Trail (1000m). We opted for the strenuous 24.7km 😬. The weather was ideal, slightly overcast warming as the day progressed. The majority of the participants were Austrian with a smattering of other Nationalities. Only one other from GB running the Power Trail. At 8.45 am we had the race briefing in German with a quick "follow the blue flags" in English. Apart from one intersection and the water stops there were no marshalls on course so it was literally follow the blue flags. Luckily the course was well marked and easy to follow. At 9.00am we were off, along a short track from Cobenzl, then almost immediately heading up the highest hill in Vienna- the Hermannskogel (543m). Passing the monument at the top would be the last time we would see any other competitors until near the finish. Apparently there was a run along a stream before climbing back up Hermannskogel from the other side joining the Classic Trail route via Kahlenberg (484m), it was difficult to know where we were. Steep and technical decents and ascents came in rapid succession through forests, vineyards and a working archery range (a little disconcerting). The views were amazing if we only had more time to take them in. There were 4 water/coke/food stops on route which were appreciated. The volunteers manning the stops were great. I took a tumble at 20km - a full superman splat. Luckily being prepared after Purple Gecko runs I was carrying a first aid kit (not a requirement or even mentioned on the kit list) so was able to disinfect the gravel clogged wound. Well done to Emma who assisted exceptionally well despite the 'don't do blood' statements. Recovered and with an apparent adrenaline rush we completed the race in 4hrs 36 well within the 5hr limit. Well done to Emma who completed the course after nursing a knee injury. Another challenge complete
